Parody

The song "Like a Boss" (above) by the Lonely Island is a parody of the song "Like a Boss" by

Slim Thug (bottom). The Lonely Island completly alters the song, while Slim Thug's lyrics are all

"Pha-real" and rap. The Lonely Island's lyrics are "boss like." This parody is funny because of its

exaggeration and bluntness, along with twisted logic. This is funny how Slim Thug is talking

about him being the "boss" of everything while the Lonely Island is talking about being the boss

of the office. This is also funny how serious Slim Thug was and how the Lonely Island is

describing a typical day gone wrong... terrible... and horrifying.

Visual Essay

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2lMC8icIK0

My claim for my visual essay was that the Native Americans should be given their land back because of the brutal treatment they received and the incapability for us to take care of their land we stole. Throughout the essay I showed various instances of the boarding schools Native Americans were forced to go to. I put images of Native American children being forced to wear uniforms, learn English, and learn the “proper” ways of how to live. One of the most powerful parts of my essay was the Native American man who was at a boarding school and lost his native tongue. Honestly, no matter how many times I watch that clip I feel like crying too. This is so sad because when you lose the language you grew up with it feels like part of you died. That also goes along with anything you lose that is dear to you, whether it was where you grew up or your parents. Another very powerful image that I decided to put in right after the clip was a painting of Native Americans getting beaten which makes it even sadder right after that clip. This is obviously sad because a person getting hurt is a sad thing. I thought also the start of my essay was very effective were it sad imagine you are a child… and all the rest of that, it really gets you in the mind set of what actually happened. After that there is four clips to show what happened: The Colonist fight the Native Americans, The Native Americans get killed, The Native leave there lands to schools, and the last image of the four is the Native Americans in the school all lined up for a picture. In my visual essay I have a song called the Last of the Mohicans which sounds like Native American music and I thought it fit perfectly in my essay. Another clip in my essay is one that a tutor in tutorials mentioned for me about the Indian crying. The video is an Native American canoeing down the river and in the water you see garbage and waste everywhere. He then goes by a huge power plant with smoke billowing from it and there is still trash everywhere. He finally gets to shore where there is more trash and from the highway someone throws trash right onto his feet and the Indian cries. This video is so effective because it shows how poorly we take care of the land that used to be Native Americans. This video uses ethos to make us feel bad about the trash we littered a week ago. This essay’s audience is for anyone who decides to watch it, but it would be more effective with older people, because they remember and saw what happened to Native Americans. Native Americans shouldn’t be confined to small areas of land where they live off the government, and that’s not what they want either. They want their land back so they can go back to the old days and live off the land and not have to worry about taxes, cars, money and the things they don’t need. They just want to live in peace with their culture intact, will you let them?
